What is animism?
Animism is a belief system where everything is interconnected. This includes humans, animals, foliage, nature, and other inanimate objects.
Animism emphasizes harmony and reciprocal responsibility between nature and human will.
By being aware of the spiritual connection between all things, human beings can tap into the spiritual reality.
Animism is a practical and pragmatic sort of culture, philosophy, and religion. For example, offering tributes in rituals to spirits in ceremony is a staple practice.
Animism in the Philippines
Animism has played a role in Filipino society under the names “anito” or “diwata”.
This belief asserts that everything in existence, primarily nature-related, is a vessel for the spirit that inhabits all. This means that everything has spiritual power.
The idea that everything holds spiritual power is common in pagan beliefs, such as wicca.
Since animism is a pragmatic belief system, human beings have done the following to harness the power of the Spirit that interconnects us all:
- Reverence rituals
- Ancestor worship
- Tribute offerings
By performing these animistic practices, you are asking the World and your deceased ancestors for protection.
Another aspect of Animism in the Philippines is tree worship. This is done with the aid of spirits, or “kapre”.
The kapre are spirits who harness unpredictable power that can shape the lives of those who offer tribute and worship.
