Feng Shui Principles, Tips & Rules (Yin & Yang)

In this post, we go over ideas surrounding feng shui principles, tips, rules, yin and yang, and so on.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy, meaning “wind and water,” with a history spanning over 4,000 years. It addresses six life aspects: health, wealth, love, family, career, and well-being, through self-awareness and environmental changes.

Feng Shui is not a strict set of rules but a personalized, long-term practice adaptable to one’s lifestyle and goals. It fosters a connection between our inner energies and surroundings.

People turn to Feng Shui when seeking positive life changes and invite good energy with intentions. This practice incorporates ancient Chinese wisdom like Yin and Yang and Chi energy, aiming to harmonize the energies in one’s space.

Feng Shui Principles, Tips & Rules

Feng Shui is a practical philosophy and part spiritual practice, because you are bringing your awareness to your space and how it affects you and your “energies”.

You do this by paying attention to how your life is going right now, then apply Feng Shui to help remedy the areas you desire.

Although the best time to apply Feng Shui is when you move into a new living space, since there is new energy to tap into, you can always make gradual adjustments to your current living space to “free up” and “unblock” any energy flow.

By making gradual changes in your current living environment, you are able to notice the effects happening to your being.

Since Feng Shui can neither be bad nor good, taking your time to slowly add, remove, and replace items in your space will give you the time to see if it makes your life easier and better, or harder and less satisfying.

Feng Shui is very personal and different person-to-person. What works for you may not work for everyone else.

Feng Shui & Chi

Energy is a metaphysical concept that is given different names based on culture. In Feng Shui, the word for energy is Chi. In other cultures, they use the words ki, prana, aura, etc.

Chi, also known as energy, is known as the life force that inhabits and flows in all things.

Feng Shui: Yin & Yang

Chi is energy that is traditionally divided into two parts: Yin and Yang.

Yin and Yang are the balancing masculine and feminine principles that make up Chi.

What is the difference between yin and yang?

Yin can be characterized as earth energy. It encourages expansion, flow, relaxation, and adaptability. It embraces energy and invites its complimentary and opposing force—yang.

Yang can be characterized as heaven energy. It is a bold and determined forces that reaches down to Earth from the heavens, to join Yin and form a Whole.

Yin and Yang can also be referred to as Context and Action. You can’t have one without the other. Where you find one, you find the other—and their forms can interchange at any given moment.

When it comes to Feng Shui, you don’t want too much yin energy or too much yang energy.

You can tell there is a major imbalance of yin or yang energy when your space (context) isn’t aligned for your desired action (action).

An example of this would be having a study that is full of distractions, or a bedroom full of electronics that prevent you from sleeping.

Striking an appropriate balance with strategic planning is necessary.

Chi can be further broken down into elemental principles, which are:

  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Water
  • Wood
  • Metal

Each of these elemental energies carry their own energetic signatures.

Feng Shui Elemental Signs & Symbols

In Feng Shui, all chi energy comes in five elements: earth, water, fire, metal, and wood.

Depending on a person’s season of life, some of these elements will dominate more than others. However, it’s best that all of these elements can be well-balanced within each person.

The elements are known as transforming principles. When they interact, they manufacture and shape each other into scenes or objects via Creative Cycle. This building appears as the following:

Fire brings upon Earth brings upon Metal brings upon Water brings upon Wood brings upon Fire.

On the other hand, these elements can form a Destructive Cycle. This can appear as the following:

Water consumes Fire consumes Metal consumes Wood consumes Earth consumes Water.

By understanding both of these cycles, you can use them to balance the Earth energy in your own life.
