Are you looking for ideas about shadow work about money?
Before we get started, let’s quickly go over a few things.
What is Shadow Self & Shadow Work?
Your shadow self, or shadow, is the side of yourself you have no awareness of. It holds all the qualities you disowned during your formative years.
Although you learned to repress these qualities and push them outside of your awareness, they still live underneath the surface.
They unconsciously guide your actions and are the unseen cause for many of the troubles in your life.
Shadow work is the intentional practice of becoming aware of your unconscious shadow and integrating these neglected qualities into your being—becoming whole.
This is a process of building self-awareness, self-acceptance, and universal Love.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
Carl Jung

Perspective on Shadow Work About Money
People typically project their own unowned qualities on the socioeconomic group that is “opposite” of themselves.
For example, there is a stereotype that poor people are lazy while wealthy people are greedy.
Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on here.
Judging the Rich Keeps You Poor
When you judge those who are prospering more than yourself, you create a construct in your mind that will prevent you from reaching your own prosperity.
Why?
Because you are cherry-picking qualities about the “other” that you don’t identify with.
The problem with this is that you may be rejecting qualities that would make you more effective in your life.
The potential to make more money lies hidden within your shadow.
Your shadow holds pragmatic qualities that your current values oppose.
This means that you have either to choose NOT to identify with qualities you need to create your own prosperity—
Or you have yet to discover your own pragmatic potentials.
Admiring the Wealthy Means You Have Potential
You wouldn’t admire somebody if something in you didn’t already sense that you have this quality within yourself.
This means that if you admire the ambitious, there is something within you that is ambitious.
You just haven’t had the chance to uncover and explore it.
Who you admire also indicates where you should go next on your own life’s journey.
To reach your own potentials, you must be willing to integrate the entire spectrum of your being.
This is also called shadow integration, which involves owning the qualities that you admire in others, as well as those you’ve disowned and find triggering.
Judging the Poor Will Kill You Emotionally if You Go Broke
On the other hand, some people have been very fortunate who judge less prosperous people very harshly.
These same people can claim the poor are lazy without realizing that they work much harder than themselves.
This isn’t always the case, but it’s a common stereotype that the poor are lazy.
However, what happens when you lose your income and your assets?
If you somehow lose everything and go broke, you will find yourself living in existential shame because you then inarguably identify with those you considered “less than” yourself.
No matter how you look at it, patronizing someone for having money, or not having money, either bars you from gaining your own prosperity or puts you in a personal hell if you ever “fall from grace.”
Shadow Work Prompts for Money
- How did your family’s relationship with money impact your view of making, spending, and saving money? Is your perspective aligned with scarcity or abundance?
- What are your thoughts on people hiding the amount of income they make? Did your family keep their money a secret? How has this impacted how open you are with finances?
- Based on the country and area you live in, how have prices affected your relationship with money? In expensive/affordable regions, how do you feel about money?
- Do you believe there is shame in admitting that you want money? Write about a time where you wanted to “show” that you had money without having to flaunt it. Why did you feel compelled to do this?
- What does money represent to you? Do you connect it to your self-worth and status? Or do you find it most often a source of shame?
